Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and was defined to deal with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. The Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles and linked to advanced study of physics and mathematics. It is generally linked to knowledge of structures, materials science, geology, soils, geography, mechanics and hydrology etc.Civil engineers use their knowledge and skills to plan, design, construct and maintain projects such as skyscrapers, motorways, bridges, tunnels and dams. Advanced computing techniques help civil engineers to design buildings, roads and bridges which are safe against earthquakes, fire, wind, snow and landslides in a better and convenient way. Day by day increase in population and growing economies increase the thirst for major construction and design projects. This provides numerous opportunities for civil engineers.
The Civil Engineering Department at RPIIT has well experienced and motivated faculty members who act as its building blocks. The faculty and students are engaged in frequent visits to various construction sites which adds to advancement in their practical knowledge with upgradation to the latest techniques. The Civil engineering laboratories are aimed to be resource centre for enhancement of traditional knowledge. The labs are equipped in a way to provide best and most efficient practical knowledge to understand basic and applied concepts including the research. The tests in laboratories are performed according to prescribed I.S codes.
Scope of Civil Engineering:
Civil Engineering has been continuously growing with advancement in civilisation and everyday increasing living standards. Day by day increase in population and growing economies increase the thirst for major construction and design projects. This provides numerous opportunities for civil engineers. Civil engineering is part and parcel of everyday life be it public sector or private sector. All the construction work such as building railways, highways, dams etc need to be adapted to the modern requirements. The Scope for civil engineering lies both in developed and developing countries for strong infrastructure formation and would continue to be the same in the coming decades. As the Government is permitting foreign investment in construction sector, the need for quality civil engineers will shoot up. Civil engineering graduates can also go in for research and take up teaching or they can open their own independent consultancy services. Some construction and Civil engineering companies in India are Larsen & Toubro, Punj Lloyd, Metro Tunnelling Group, Unitech Group, Gammon India and Jaypee Group etc.
Minimum Academic Qualifications for B.E./B.Tech.:
Should be a pass in 10+2 examination from recognized Board/University with Physics and
Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the following subjects:
(c) Computer Science
Obtained at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidate belonging to reserved category i.e. SC category) in the above subjects taken together.
Intake: As per AICTE norms.
Duration: 4 years.
